“If I could recommend one thing for you to do ahead of all others to improve your health it would be to walk more. It will do more good than anything else I could prescribe to you today.” Dr Bob Sallis
There are lots of opportunities for Warrnambool residents to walk – for fun, to get where you need to go, to meet people and socialise.
Here are some tips to help you get walking:
- Think of walking as an opportunity not an inconvenience. Thinking positively helps.
- Walking to get where you need to go suits many people and helps build walking into daily life.
- Join a walking group - they’re a fun and free way to meet people and enjoy regular walking.
- Swap sitting for walking – think of ways to add more walking into your day!
Some ideas:
- Swap from sitting for coffee, cake and a chat to walking and chatting & having a cuppa at the end;
- Swap driving to the shops to walking with a shopping trolley – there are great new designs available.
- Swap from finding a car park exactly where you want to go to parking a few blocks away and walking some of the way.
- Swap driving to visit friends or family to walking and meeting them at a park
- Swap watching TV to playing bowls – it could be lawn, carpet or tenpin!
- Walk to school with your children, or if you need to drive, drop them a few minutes’ walk from the gate.
